API 5L Schedule 40 Pipe comes in different grades within the API 5L specification. The pipes also have different product specification levels PSL1 and PSL 2 in each grade. The various grades are A, B, X42, X46 and up to X70. All these are used as line pipes to transport fluids over long distances. The API 5L DSAW Line Pipe is made up of carbon, manganese, phosphorus, sulfur, vanadium, niobium and titanium in the composition in varying amounts depending on the different grades. These are basically carbon steel pipes that can be used in high toughness, high wear and tear and high strength application requirements.

The yield strength of the pipes are denominated by the X number of the pipes in ksi. For example, the API 5L Carbon Steel Seamless Pipe belonging to the grade X42 has 42ksi minimum yield strength and X70 has 70 ksi minimum yield strength. The tensile strength of the grade A pipes is 48ksi and the maximum is 82 ksi for X70 grade. The API 5l psl2 pipe has slightly higher mechanical properties than the PSL1 pipes. The difference comes from chemical compositional difference and heat treatment. These pipe grades could be tested with bending test, flattening test and impact test types. The API 5l line pipe can be used in offshore oil drilling application, sour service application and in petroleum and oil and gas applications.
